PRINCE2®, which stands for Projects in Controlled Environments, is a project management method covering the organisation, management and control of projects. PRINCE2 was first developed by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) now part of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) in 1989 as a UK Government standard for IT project management.
Since its introduction, PRINCE2 has become widely used in both the public and private sectors and is now the UK's de facto standard for project management. Although PRINCE2 was originally developed for the needs of IT projects, the method has also been used on many non-IT projects. The latest version of the method, PRINCE2, is designed to incorporate the requirements of existing users and to enhance the method towards a generic, best practice approach for the management of all types of projects.
The design and development work was undertaken by a consortium of project management specialists, under contract to OGC, and over 150 public and private sector organisations were involved in a Review Panel which provided valuable input and feedback to the consortium.
This is an examination based course, which gives delegates accreditation at PRINCE2 Practitioner level. The course equips delegates with a detailed knowledge and structure of the method, working through each stage of pre-project preparation and the project lifecycle. The course will detail how to initiate projects, including the documentation to be produced such as the Project Initiation Document and the Business Case. It will then move on to product delivery and controlling each stage of the project, from both the perspective of the Project Manager and the Project Board. The course will then address the issues surrounding project completion.
The course combines the Foundation course and follows on from successful completion of the Foundation exam, building on the delegate's knowledge of the structure and content of PRINCE2 and tunes this knowledge into an understanding of the practical application of the method which is being examined in the practitioner paper. Time will be given to assessing risks within the project, planning techniques and how to ensure a quality approach runs throughout the project.
Note: PRINCE2® is a Trade Mark of the Office of Government Commerce. The PRINCE2 Cityscape logo® is a Trade Mark of the Office of Government Commerce in the United Kingdom and other countries. Ownership of PRINCE2® belongs to the OGC and is managed by the APMG.
PRINCE2 stands for PRojects IN Controlled Environments and is a structured method for effective project management. The method is owned by the UK Government, but is provided license free to anyone who wishes to adopt it. It is now accepted throughout the UK as 'best practice' project management.
The key elements of this structured method are:
The key benefits of using PRINCE2 are:
A PRINCE2 project is divided into a number of stages, each forming a distinct unit for management purposes. The delivery of products to the agreed quality standards, marks the completion of the stage.
A project is divided into stages based upon:
PRINCE2 provides a structure of management controls to be applied throughout the project.
They are defined at Project Initiation to ensure:
These controls cover all aspects of project activity and, at the highest level, allow senior management to assess project achievement and status prior to committing further expenditure.
Controls are applied through meetings of project management and project staff, with each meeting producing a set of predefined outputs.
There are 2 levels of qualification. The Foundation Level demonstrates a detailed knowledge and understanding of the method and terminology, Practitioner Level demonstrates ability to practically apply this knowledge to project situations.
Other accelerated training providers rely heavily on lecture and independent self-testing and study.
Effective technical instruction must be highly varied and interactive to keep attention levels high, promote camaraderie and teamwork between the students and instructor, and solidify knowledge through hands-on learning.
This information has been provided as a helpful tool for candidates considering certification. Benefits of certification determined through studies do not guarantee any particular personal successes. Firebrand Training provides a guarantee of obtaining certification at the camp, but does not make any guarantees about personal successes or benefits of obtaining certification.
Firebrand Training's PRINCE2 Accelerated Certification Program is the most effective, efficient way to learn how to use the process-based approach for project management providing an easily tailored, and scalable method for the management of all types of projects.
Students attending this program will receive a robust set of course materials that caters to each of the three primary individual learning-intake styles (auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic-tactual) - critical for a successful accelerated learning experience.
Daily lectures, exercises, and review sessions are supplemented by a combination of:
The PRINCE2: Program prepares students to achieve two certifications during the program: Foundation and Practitioner.
The PRINCE2 Foundation Examination is a multiple-choice paper consisting of 75 questions. You will have one hour and you need 38 correct answers to pass.
The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam comprises 9 questions based around a scenario, each covering a different syllabus area which will be clearly identified within the question. Each of the nine questions is worth 40 marks and will be sub-divided into parts. This gives a total of 360 marks. The pass mark is 180 marks out of a possible 360.
You will have 3 hours to complete the PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam. All questions and part-questions are expected to be answered. You are allowed to reference the PRINCE2 manual in this exam but no other supporting materials are permitted.
Firebrand Training offers top-quality technical education and certification training in an all-inclusive course package specifically designed for the needs and ease of our students. We attend to every detail so our students can focus solely on their studies and certification goals.
Our instructors teach to accommodate every student's learning needs through individualised instruction, hands-on labs, lab partner and group exercises, independent study, self-testing, and question/answer drills.
Firebrand Training has dedicated, well-equipped educational facilities where you will attend instruction and labs and have access to comfortable study and lounging rooms. Our students consistently say our facilities are second-to-none.
Should a student complete a Firebrand Training Program without having successfully passed all vendor examinations, the student may re-attend that program for a period of one year. Students will only be responsible for accommodations and vendor exam fees.
Students that are successful in the PRINCE2 Accelerated Certification Program should possess a minimum of one and a half years of project management experience either directly as a project manager or as part of a team.
Firebrand Training staff interview all potential students regarding their technical background, degrees and certifications held, and personal fortitude. This screening process ensures a successful match between the customer and Firebrand Training toward accelerated training and certification.
Firebrand Training is an aggressive training environment. You must have an attitude aimed for success. The above prerequisites are guidelines, but many students with less experience have other background or traits that have enabled their success in accelerated training through Firebrand Training.
"The training facility and Prince2 course material was excellent. In addition, the lecturer was always available to assist with questions and exam preparation. The experience was very positive......"

PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (9/10/2006 to 13/10/2006)
"Fantastic-I have never learnt so much in such a short period of time. It was hard work, extremely intense but a lot of fun."
Melanie Potts, Siemens.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (5/11/2007 to 9/11/2007)

Jonathan Nadarajah, Ginsters.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (8/5/2006 to 12/5/2006)
"Excellent course tutor, clearly knew his subject and was able to impart his knowledge across a broad spectrum of candidate experience - 100% success on foundation exam.
Great location, very conducive to learning.
Pre-reading material helped prepare for what was an very intensive course."
Nick Hatton, Virgin Money.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (9/10/2006 to 13/10/2006)
"Great place to come and train, helps focus learning in a comfortable and friendly environment. I have been here for three different courses and the standards have always been high."
KT, Protherics.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (9/6/2008 to 13/6/2008)
"The intensive one week course was ideal for me as home study is not really an option as I am not a studeous person. It is tough, you certainly do the studying that all the other students email says that you will do.
If the class all get on this is great. After our first exam we all ended up in the bar for a well earned beer or several and a few games of snooker. I think it is good to have one night that you don't think about the course, as you tend to forget about the outside world and tend to only think about the course."
Robin Pettifer, Varian Medical Systems.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (20/2/2006 to 24/2/2006)
"An intense way of learning. Don't expect much time to relax, or even sleep, but if you pass it is well worth the experience.
It keeps you focused on Prince2 without letting work getting in the way."
S.B., NCP.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (28/11/2005 to 2/12/2005)
"I found this experience very rewarding. The days are very intense and sometimes it feels like it is a lot to handle, but it is well worth it. At the end of this week I now feel quite confident."
Sandra Mckie, Hymans Robertson.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (28/11/2005 to 2/12/2005)
"The telesales guy was good - I was somewhat nervous because that was my money ... could have done the course for half the price in london 9-5. But telesales plus recommend made me. I had absolutely no doubt by the end of the first day that this was not only an excellent course and training establishment but that the course was really practical. I can not wait to use this ... need to get a job and would affect my choice of job. "
Dathan Burden, Job hunting.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (20/10/2008 to 24/10/2008)
"For the Prince2 Course, please read the pre-course material. On Firebrand* itself, I think it was a good location and the method of study was excellent. Good way to learn and just focus on the course in hand."
Gene da Rocha, Hyperweb.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (31/7/2006 to 4/8/2006)
"Our lecturer had the patience of a saint and found the perfect balance between working hard, and laughing and having fun. At no point did I feel I couldnt ask a question about something I didnt understand. It was the most intensive learning experience Ive ever had, but in over 20 years of education it was also the most enjoyable.
The feeling of satisfaction for completing the course and understanding the material is second to none. It was an intensive week but it was still sad to say goodbye at the end of it all. Firebrand* have got the balance just right and I would recommend them to anyone looking to complete a training course.
And of course I couldnt finish without mentioning the impressive quality of the food and kitchen staff. 3 delicious meals a day cooked to perfection and served with a friendly smile. They certainly are an asset to the Trianing Camp team."
David Hartley, Gurit.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (16/7/2007 to 20/7/2007)
"If you have never considered this option before do not hesitate. The organisation, facilities and structure of the course was first class with a fabulous location setting. Although the course is very hard work, being residential allows you just to concentrate on the course and forget your normal day to day issues and the normal commute. Firebrand* was not the cheapest option but i think you will find the benefits outweigh any additional cost. Be prepared to work hard and then reap the rewards."
Simon Hessey, Redundant.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (15/1/2007 to 19/1/2007)

PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (14/5/2007 to 18/5/2007)
"The course exceeded my expectations. The campus, both accommodation and operations were excelent. The course, materials and trainer (Mark Percy, Prince2) were exceptional. I would recommend to collegues and friends and would keep Firebrand* a closly kept secret from the competition.
I was concerned about my own ability to function and perform in a diciplined learning environment after many years away. The Learning Camp experience has given me the confidence and appitite to drive myself to continue learning. I am looking for other skills to learn as a result of enjoying this experience. "
Darren Taylor, Somerset County Council.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (16/7/2007 to 20/7/2007)

TH, Merrill Lynch.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (3/12/2007 to 7/12/2007)
"Although the course was focused and long hours, the day was divided up sufficiently to maintain interest and participation. On the first day I thought we would never be able to cover everything fully in preparation for the exams but it did all start falling into place Thursday!"
Kathryn Dunn, self employed contractor.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (20/3/2006 to 24/3/2006)
"The course is very enjoyable but very hard and I realise now what the term accerlerated learning really means! The instructor knew his subject inside ou andt was very helpful and encouraging at all times.Ensure you do the pre-course work if you are not in a project managers post is my advice but enjoy it as it will really get the brain working."
Maggie Cocking, unemployed at present.

"I was fortunate enough to have a very bonding and friendly group of candidates to work with in addition to an excellent instructor who not only structured the course well but presented and explained in such a way that things "clicked" in throughout the course. Food and the location was excellent and I would highly recommend this course at this location of Firebrand* to anyone seeking recommendations."
Arslan Malik, Entertainment UK.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (30/4/2007 to 4/5/2007)

Peter Edwards, HBOS plc.

"The course was hard work but enjoyable, well worth it and the information learned invaluable to me. The instuctor was outstanding in his knowledge and delivery of the course. I dont think I have ever laughed so much on a training course before and it was always in context with the course. You had everything you needed at the camp and Firebrand* staff were friendly and couldn't do enough to help. The chefs were top class and would always go out their way to help. All in all a fantastic experience and would come back again and again."
