PRINCE2®, which stands for Projects in Controlled Environments, is a project management method covering the organisation, management and control of projects. PRINCE2 was first developed by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) now part of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) in 1989 as a UK Government standard for IT project management.
Since its introduction, PRINCE2 has become widely used in both the public and private sectors and is now the UK's de facto standard for project management. Although PRINCE2 was originally developed for the needs of IT projects, the method has also been used on many non-IT projects. The latest version of the method, PRINCE2, is designed to incorporate the requirements of existing users and to enhance the method towards a generic, best practice approach for the management of all types of projects.
The design and development work was undertaken by a consortium of project management specialists, under contract to OGC, and over 150 public and private sector organisations were involved in a Review Panel which provided valuable input and feedback to the consortium.
This is an examination based course, which gives delegates accreditation at PRINCE2 Practitioner level. The course equips delegates with a detailed knowledge and structure of the method, working through each stage of pre-project preparation and the project lifecycle. The course will detail how to initiate projects, including the documentation to be produced such as the Project Initiation Document and the Business Case. It will then move on to product delivery and controlling each stage of the project, from both the perspective of the Project Manager and the Project Board. The course will then address the issues surrounding project completion.
The course combines the Foundation course and follows on from successful completion of the Foundation exam, building on the delegate's knowledge of the structure and content of PRINCE2 and tunes this knowledge into an understanding of the practical application of the method which is being examined in the practitioner paper. Time will be given to assessing risks within the project, planning techniques and how to ensure a quality approach runs throughout the project.
Note: PRINCE2® is a Trade Mark of the Office of Government Commerce. The PRINCE2 Cityscape logo® is a Trade Mark of the Office of Government Commerce in the United Kingdom and other countries. Ownership of PRINCE2® belongs to the OGC and is managed by the APMG.
PRINCE2 stands for PRojects IN Controlled Environments and is a structured method for effective project management. The method is owned by the UK Government, but is provided license free to anyone who wishes to adopt it. It is now accepted throughout the UK as 'best practice' project management.
The key elements of this structured method are:
The key benefits of using PRINCE2 are:
A PRINCE2 project is divided into a number of stages, each forming a distinct unit for management purposes. The delivery of products to the agreed quality standards, marks the completion of the stage.
A project is divided into stages based upon:
PRINCE2 provides a structure of management controls to be applied throughout the project.
They are defined at Project Initiation to ensure:
These controls cover all aspects of project activity and, at the highest level, allow senior management to assess project achievement and status prior to committing further expenditure.
Controls are applied through meetings of project management and project staff, with each meeting producing a set of predefined outputs.
There are 2 levels of qualification. The Foundation Level demonstrates a detailed knowledge and understanding of the method and terminology, Practitioner Level demonstrates ability to practically apply this knowledge to project situations.
Other accelerated training providers rely heavily on lecture and independent self-testing and study.
Effective technical instruction must be highly varied and interactive to keep attention levels high, promote camaraderie and teamwork between the students and instructor, and solidify knowledge through hands-on learning.
This information has been provided as a helpful tool for candidates considering certification. Benefits of certification determined through studies do not guarantee any particular personal successes. Firebrand Training provides a guarantee of obtaining certification at the camp, but does not make any guarantees about personal successes or benefits of obtaining certification.
Firebrand Training's PRINCE2 Accelerated Certification Program is the most effective, efficient way to learn how to use the process-based approach for project management providing an easily tailored, and scalable method for the management of all types of projects.
Students attending this program will receive a robust set of course materials that caters to each of the three primary individual learning-intake styles (auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic-tactual) - critical for a successful accelerated learning experience.
Daily lectures, exercises, and review sessions are supplemented by a combination of:
The PRINCE2: Program prepares students to achieve two certifications during the program: Foundation and Practitioner.
The PRINCE2 Foundation Examination is a multiple-choice paper consisting of 75 questions. You will have one hour and you need 38 correct answers to pass.
The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam comprises 9 questions based around a scenario, each covering a different syllabus area which will be clearly identified within the question. Each of the nine questions is worth 40 marks and will be sub-divided into parts. This gives a total of 360 marks. The pass mark is 180 marks out of a possible 360.
You will have 3 hours to complete the PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam. All questions and part-questions are expected to be answered. You are allowed to reference the PRINCE2 manual in this exam but no other supporting materials are permitted.
Firebrand Training offers top-quality technical education and certification training in an all-inclusive course package specifically designed for the needs and ease of our students. We attend to every detail so our students can focus solely on their studies and certification goals.
Our instructors teach to accommodate every student's learning needs through individualised instruction, hands-on labs, lab partner and group exercises, independent study, self-testing, and question/answer drills.
Firebrand Training has dedicated, well-equipped educational facilities where you will attend instruction and labs and have access to comfortable study and lounging rooms. Our students consistently say our facilities are second-to-none.
Should a student complete a Firebrand Training Program without having successfully passed all vendor examinations, the student may re-attend that program for a period of one year. Students will only be responsible for accommodations and vendor exam fees.
Students that are successful in the PRINCE2 Accelerated Certification Program should possess a minimum of one and a half years of project management experience either directly as a project manager or as part of a team.
Firebrand Training staff interview all potential students regarding their technical background, degrees and certifications held, and personal fortitude. This screening process ensures a successful match between the customer and Firebrand Training toward accelerated training and certification.
Firebrand Training is an aggressive training environment. You must have an attitude aimed for success. The above prerequisites are guidelines, but many students with less experience have other background or traits that have enabled their success in accelerated training through Firebrand Training.
"A focussed and intensive course, but good fun nevertheless"
Pam Highton, Thames Valley Police.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (8/10/2007 to 12/10/2007)
"Before I went to Firebrand* all I had was a big manual and pre-course reading course material. I wasn't sure how I was going to read and understand the right information from the big manual to prepare me enough for the exams. Fortunately at the end of the course I did not only understand the right information for the exams but also for life.
I will definitely go back to Firebrand* and I recommend it."
GIFTY SAKYI, Department for International Development.

"The location was fantastic and enable you to completely remove yourself for work and other external influences. The grounds and setting were relaxing with opportunities to exercise from walking to swimming to golf and football. The staff trainers and general location made it easy to form a team spirit with fellow attendees. I would highly recommend Heythrop Park, it maybe a few quid more than your local centre but the return far outways the extra investment."

PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (11/9/2006 to 15/9/2006)
"My Prince2 course experience met expectations, and I have never worked so hard in five days! Anyone thinking this is a holiday will be very upset, but will be very happy when you find everyone in the class passes the exams! On the one night off after the Foundation, we had two beers and everyone went back to their rooms to sleep! Great venue, great teacher and plenty of food and drink to keep you going!"
Paul Underwood, Ostrich Media Ltd.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (22/10/2007 to 26/10/2007)
"As a self-employed person its not an easy step to spend this kind of money on training, but the experience lived up to every expectation and I would not hesitate in recommending clients and colleagues to consider Firebrand for their training needs. Im glad I took the risk."
Patrick Foster, Self-employed.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (3/12/2007 to 7/12/2007)
"Fantastic experience. Excellent trainer who truly knew his subject AND was able to communicate it ( Rare in my book ). Hard work ( but what do you expect? ). Truly do not believe that I could possibly have achieved as much by attending a day course. Customer service ( and food! ) are fantastic - accomodation is on the basic side but, to be honest, its only somewhere to sleep! Would certainly recommend and will be back for MSP!"
Paul Reeve, Myself!.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (31/7/2006 to 4/8/2006)
"The course was intense and it was only really on the 4th day that the "light bulbs" went on and things started fitting into place. PRINCE2 is very prescriptive in its approach to project management and definitely serves as a good framework. "
Thomas Klaus, Zurich Insurance.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (26/3/2007 to 30/3/2007)
"Overall, a very pleasant experience. Instructor kept the course on track and interesting. Catering is fabulous. "
Steve Cunningham, ...
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (11/8/2008 to 15/8/2008)
"If you have never considered this option before do not hesitate. The organisation, facilities and structure of the course was first class with a fabulous location setting. Although the course is very hard work, being residential allows you just to concentrate on the course and forget your normal day to day issues and the normal commute. Firebrand* was not the cheapest option but i think you will find the benefits outweigh any additional cost. Be prepared to work hard and then reap the rewards."
Simon Hessey, Redundant.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (15/1/2007 to 19/1/2007)
"The course was hard work, especially if you have been away from an intense learning environment for some years, over 20 in my case, however the instruction was superb with the course material and pre test questions very well written. If you want to pass the course and are prepared to put in a little effort you can achieve your aim."
John Adderley, Jessop Group PLC.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (8/10/2007 to 12/10/2007)
"Good experience. Opportunity for focused training with all needs accomodated."
Mike Pledge, MandM Direct Ltd.
PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner (5 Days) (1/9/2008 to 5/9/2008)
"The course was hard work but enjoyable, well worth it and the information learned invaluable to me. The instuctor was outstanding in his knowledge and delivery of the course. I dont think I have ever laughed so much on a training course before and it was always in context with the course. You had everything you needed at the camp and Firebrand* staff were friendly and couldn't do enough to help. The chefs were top class and would always go out their way to help. All in all a fantastic experience and would come back again and again."
Fraser Dickson, Burness LLP.
